As organization have transformed in recent years, one or more substantially progressive form of organization design has been introduced to cope with intensified competition and business dynamism (Mowshowitz 1997; Davidow&Malone 1992). Its continuous development becomes critical not only to the pervasiveness of new business activities but also to the birth of the virtual organization.
The concept virtual organizations has essentially been emerging in the business arena for over two decades as the ramification of advanced information technology toward changes in work practices and managerial activities becomes increasingly intensified (Barnett 1997; Lucas&Baroudi 1994; Venkatesh&Vitali1992). Researchers attempt to define a virtual organization in the view of divergent characteristics, which mostly reflect its feature of virtuality (Mowshowiz 1994). In the work of Mowshowitz (1997), he reiterates that there is on universally accepted definition because it is a relatively new idea.
The purpose of this paper is to discuss some definition of virtual organizations presented in the mainstream information systems literature; to address how virtual organizations develop through diverse factor; and to articulate the challenges facing the success of virtual organizations along with a discussion on variety of research to suggest variables significant in obtaining high levels of performance in virtual organizations.
