Data collection is one of the most critical areas in any research effort particularly in survey research. Without careful attention to data collection, “garbage-In, garbage-out (GIGO) could be the unwitting result. Unbiased and clean data are required from the very beginning of the study in order to prevent unusable result.
This paper describes the process of data collection for bus tourists in Thailand over two 1 year periods, 2000 to 2001 and 2005 to 2006. Careful choosing of the population frame, a well-thought out sampling methodology and control of the data collection processes enable the researcher to estimate with confidence the proportions of bus tourists and the revenue generated by bus entrepreneurs from this tourists sector. Thus, the Tourists Authority of Thailand (TAT) can fruitfully utilize these figures and findings to plan a better scheme for the Thai tourists industry. Since a significant source of Thailand’s national income from the tourists sector, a reliable and accurate estimate will help TAT develop good working plans, which will in turn surely enhance the national economy. The research conclusion also suggests the method to develop the Land Transport database, which support the Thai National Income Account and GDP statistics.
