The growth of the new communication technologies in Thailand has occurred in with similar trends occurring worldwide. In recent years the Internet for commerce and is gaining strong popularity in Thai society because of its communicative power, in terns functions. The Internet is thought of as an essential tool for communication, for seeking information and for debating various issues.
This technology is already affecting Thai lifestyles, with new social practices, values, and attitudes being promoted online. Sending, receiving and checking e-mail are now routine daily activities for many Thai people. Another change relates to a social custom. In the past Thai people liked to go to local coffee shops in the morning to read newspapers online and discuss various issues via many established forums on the Internet. Although not traditionally practiced in Thailand, cards are now exchanged on the Internet for Birthdays, New Year, Christmas and Valentine’s Day. In these instances, the Internet is affecting behavior and daily activities, and it is logical to ask Questions about assessing impacts on frequent users. In is particularly interesting to investigate if new communication technologies, such as the Internet, have affected or changed core Thai cultural values.
There are four value systems or dimensions (Buddhism, Supernaturalism, Social Structure and Affiliations) that are considered as core and important in Thai society. Both Buddhism and Supernaturalism have been demonstrated to be influenced by the use of communication technologies – which are used to promote the many aspects of Buddhist and Supernatural beliefs with associated products or services. As the structure of Thai society is a hierarchy, based on seniority and a strong sense of affiliation, new communication technologies such as the Internet are considered to substantially influence attitudes towards seniority and affiliation. The prime objectives of this paper are: to summaries the introduction and general features to major new communication technologies over a century of modernization in Thailand; to explain the interaction of new communication technologies (especially the Internet) in the process of socio-cultural change in Thailand, using Weaver’s integrative cultural model which explains the short – term impacts of technology on behavior and attitudes; to identify the core Thai cultural values and interactions between new communication technologies especially the Internet and four core Thai values (Buddhism, Supernaturalism, Social Structure and Affiliations).
