The issue of leadership style and three theories of matching leadership style to situations in order to improve productivity are explored. The theories are found lacking in their usefulness in improving productivity and the underlying assumptions of leadership style theories are examined. It is proposed that too much attention has been focused on leadership style and the recommendation that while style of leadership has a role in improved productivity, the substance of leadership, decision making, and the skills and abilities of the followers have more influence on results and should be the focus of scholars and management practitioners interested in how leadership can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of organizations.
