The hotel industry has internationalized significantly in recent years, in terms of its ownership, operation and management because of the need to maintain standards and compete in the hospitality services market place. This feature of the industry carries with it a number of challenges and opportunities for expatriate and local managers alike. Harris and Moran (1987: 4) in talking about “global manager” note that the responsibilities on them are enormous. They can be summarized as the need to deal with people and human culture: to have open minds: and perhaps above all, to respect and appreciate cross country variations in behavior patterns and culture. In this context, it can be argued that all these attributes are crucial to the long term success in hotel business.
The objectives of this paper are to examine the relationship between global management and culture: to relate the analysis to the hotel industry in Thailand: and to use the synthesis to develop guidelines relevant to successful international hotel business within the Thai culture. For one thing, it has been recognized that Thai people are, by nature, hospitable, and the country itself has enjoyed a long history and rich culture-factors which affect the work environment positively. For another, the western approach to life, work and even business, conversely, differs from that of the Thai’s. Therefore, to succeed in a Thai business environment, it is important for foreign managers operating in the hotel subsector to understand the Thai society, its values, including its world view, by becoming culture sensitive in an increasingly competitive world.
