The purpose of this study is to examine the employment condition} career opportunities, the characteristics of social studies graduates, and suggestion, which will lead to the development of overall social program.
The sample consisted of seventy undergraduates and graduates who graduated in 1997 to 2001. The study involved distributing questionnaires and analyzed using frequency and percentage. Findings were as follow:
1. Most undergraduates and graduates of social studies are female. The undergraduates outnumber the graduates. Most of them live in Chiang Mai and completed their degrees in 2001.
2. With regard to employment condition, the study reveals that most graduates applied for jobs at private companies or private Schools. What seems to be the problem is that their academic qualifications do not foreign language proficiency. However, the majority of social studies graduates could obtain their jobs.
3. Data shows a significant number of graduates holding positions or being staff member of private schools, earning monthly salaries of 6,001 to 8,000 Baht. Their responsibilities are teaching, supervising, or organizing training sessions. They are satisfied with their job, because the match their academic background. What they are content with in particular are the certain characteristics the have acquired from the program: responsibilities, interpersonal skills, planning ability, industry, patience, punctuality, critical thinking, self-confidence, the application of knowledge gained to actual practice, development potential, and creativity, respectively. There are, however, two additional aspects that the graduates wish the program could provide: computer skill and foreign language proficiency.
4. Suggestions to further improve the social studies program are specified as follows:
4.1 Social studies comprise vast areas of knowledge and are the integration of other associated subjects. The subjects encourage students to keep abreast of world current issues and inculcate students with morality and ethic. Critical thinking, creativity, and vision are among the desired qualities of students.
4.2 The drawbacks of the program are as follows: the syllabus is not up-to-date; emphasis is on theory rather than practice; the teaching procedure relies heavily on memorization while first-hand experience are not underscored; the content of the subjects does not comply with the change in education system; and the students are not fully equipped with computer skills and English proficiency.
4.3 Social studies have a lot of offer. They help form and shape ideal traits expected in the graduates. These traits include the planning ability, self-confidence, interests in the news and information, interpersonal skills, reasoning, and positive attitudes towards teaching career.
4.4 There are ways to help the graduates find job. Computer skills and English proficiency should be strongly emphasized and Computer Science ought to be a compulsory subject. Up-to-date information on job vacancies should be available. Furthermore, guidance on how to effectively search for a job how to improve personality and appearance should be provided before students graduate.
