คำอธิบาย / บทคัดย่อ The purposes of this classroom research were to compare summary writing ability in English and self – directed learning of undergraduate students before and after learning through knowledge – based writing activities. The target group was 18 English major students who enrolled in 058451: Technology in Teaching English Course in the second semester or the academic year 2001, Department of Secondary Education, Faculty of Education, Chiang Mai University. The summary writing ability in English test and the self – directed learning questionnaire were administered before and after the 5 weeks of learning through knowledge – based writing activities. Then the dates were analyzed using mean, percentage and standard deviation. The findings of the research were as follows: 1.The students learned through knowledge – based writing activities had higher scores of summary writing ability in English than those of the pretest. 2. The students learned through knowledge – based writing activities had higher scores of self-directed learning than those of the pretest.
